What Is Corrosion?
Steel corrosion is deterioration due to electrochemical reactions with the metal and its environment. Specifically for steel, rusting occurs when the iron in the metal oxidises. In most cases, in order for corrosion to occur, both oxygen and water must be present.
What is corrosion protection?
Corrosion protection is the application of anti-corrosion chemicals and substances to prevent damage to equipment or facilities caused by corrosive agents and the environmental elements.
Why do I need corrosion protection?
Corrosion protection can reduce the costs of repairs due to corrosive damage. Protected equipment can avoid service interruptions and operation malfunctions. Corrosion protection can save lives from injuries brought by weathered equipment and facilities.
Is corrosion worse in coastal areas?
Rusting of iron occurs only if iron comes in contact with moisture or moist air. In coastal areas, the air contains a higher percentage of moisture because of sea or ocean. As the percentage of moisture in the air is more in coastal areas compared to dryer areas, rusting becomes faster.
At what stage of construction do I need to apply corrosion proctection?
Once a steel structure has been formed and inspected, the corrosion protection will be applied as soon as possible to minimize the time of exposure to environmental elements.
